John Short opened the scoring for Leeds after twenty minutes, with Aubrey Powell adding a second. Short got his second and Leeds' third. The Waterford goalkeeper, Denning, who had performed wonders to keep the score to a respectable level, had to leave the field with a shoulder injury just before half time. Johnston, the Shelbourne right-half took over in goal, until the Shelbourne reserve goalkeeper, Ginnetty, was able to take the field. Carroll reduced the arrears after fifty minutes, before the floodgates opened as Powell got his second and Leeds' fourth, Short completed his hat-trick for the Leeds fifth. Carroll scored the Shelbourne second goal to make it 5-2 before Ainsley added three more, Cochrane netted and Short made it four for the night and completed a 10-2 scoreline.

Match Report: From the Irish Times (Thanks to Steve Bell for Report and Waterford team)

"The meeting of Leeds United and Shelbourne at Shelbourne Park, drew an attendance, the size of which will not be seen at Ringsend for many a long day if the League Champions are to continue serving up displays such as the one they put up against Leeds last night."

"Shelbourne's team looked third rate. From the opening whistle their defence was at sixes and sevens, and but for the grand show by Denning up to the interval they might have had many more goals scored against them."

"The trouble started when the Shelbourne wing-halves began to wander up field, and the opposing inside forwards were allowed to do almost as they liked. This Leeds pair Powell and Short, took the fullest advantage of their freedom, and, through them, the winners built up a commanding lead by half-time."

"Just before the interval, Denning had a recurrence of his shoulder injury and he retired. Johnston went into goal until Ginnetty, a reserve, came out to fill the position, but thereafter Leeds scored with a will. They netted five times during the last sixteen minutes."

"The diminutive Irish International, Cochrane, was in irresistable form at outside right for Leeds, and gave Haughey an unhappy time."

"Denning played well during his stay, but the only other defender of note was Nolan."

"After twenty minutes, Short left Denning helpless, with a shot in off the upright. Powell got the second, a great drive from more than twenty yards. Cochrane was the instigator of the third goal, as he drew the defence before parting to Short, who tapped the ball home."

"Carroll reduced the arrears after fifty minutes from a pass by Kirkbride. Powell then got Leeds' fourth, and Short added number five before Carroll scored Shelbourne's second goal. Three goals from Ainsley and one each from Cochrane and Short closed the scoring of this almost farcical match."
